When do I need a VIN inspection and how do I get one?

People often need a Vehicle Identification Number Inspection for out-of-state titles or changing body types (example: bus to a flatbed trailer).

The Salida Police Department will do VIN Inspections for vehicles being registered in Chaffee County and will complete the inspection only if the vehicle will be inside Salida City limits. For VIN inspections outside city limits, please call Chaffee County Sheriff's Office.

To obtain a VIN inspection:

Go to Salida Salida Police Department Mon - Thurs 8:00a.m. - 5:00 p.m. located at 448 E. 1st Street, Suite 274) to pay the $20.00 VIN Inspection fee.

***Note*** If our front office is closed, please go to City Hall (Suite 112) to pay the $20 fee. City Hall is open Mon-Fri 9:00a.m. - 4:00p.m.

DO NOT FILL OUT FORM THAT IS GIVEN TO YOU

Call 719-539-2596 to schedule a VIN inspection, let Dispatch know where you will meet and give a description of the vehicle or trailer. They will give you an estimated wait time that is usually within the hour.

A Police Officer will either meet you at your house (if within the City limits) or at the Salida Police Department (located at the Touber Building).
