The City of Salida is a model for other communities working towards a more sustainable future through our commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction. As a global community and host to travelers and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world, the City of Salida is committed to protecting the environment for everyone. Many of the City's sustainability initiatives are highlighted below. 

The City works to partner with local and regional collaborators who can help further the City's sustainability goals. Some of the City's partners include:

Electric vehicle charging stations with a car plugged in Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Staying ahead of the electric car revolution has positioned Salida to offer the services and facilities necessary for EV drivers to live in and visit the community. The City of Salida currently has a combined total of 11 Level 2 and Level 3 charging station ports.

The City of Salida values the conservation and enhancement of its historic small-town character and recognizes its responsibility to protect the environment and address sustainability.

The Partners in Energy Program through Xcel Energy provides resources to communities that are looking to take their energy planning to the next level. The City of Salida began working with Xcel Energy in 2022 to help guide the City through the process of developing an energy plan and provide assistance with implementing that plan.

The Sustainability Committee is focused on improving the City's carbon footprint through thoughtful analysis of the community's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, updating and advancing local guidelines and codes to lower energy consumption, and improvement of waste diversion and recycling to keep our landfill viable. Members of the Committee are also passionate about addressing other environmental challenges including recycling and energy efficiency in our homes and businesses.

City of Salida - Trees Tree Board

Walk around Salida and you’ll see an abundance of trees, from silver maples and American elms casting leafy shade over city streets to tall spruces in parks, and crabapples in yards blooming in clouds of pink blossoms in spring. Yet Salida wasn’t always a tree-shaded place. Historic photos show trees only along the Arkansas River and larger streams.

Salida’s urban forest was planted and nurtured by the people who settled here beginning in the late 1800s. Their choices of trees reflect those species that could survive the dry, windy climate.

The City of Salida has partnered with the local nonprofit Unbottle and Protect Chaffee County Water to provide water bottle fill stations throughout the city and county. The City supports the program to provide alternatives to single-use plastic bottles within our community to help reduce water, encourage recycling, and provide more sustainable options for water consumption.
