SALIDA, CO (October 19, 2023) — The City of Salida and nonprofit developer Artspace are pleased to announce the selected architectural team for the Salida Space to Create: '1st & D' Apartments Project. Cushing Terrell Multidisciplinary Building Design and Connect One Design Landscape Architecture and Planning were chosen for this impactful project which will feature up to 19 units of affordable workforce housing in close proximity to downtown Salida.

The Salida Space to Create: '1st & D' project is a part of the Space to Create Colorado program, run by Colorado Creative Industries (CCI). The initiative focuses on developing much needed rural workforce housing anchored in select creative districts across the state of Colorado.

Artspace is the lead developer for Salida Space to Create: ‘1st & D’ Apartments and they have selected Cushing Terrell Multidisciplinary Building Design and Connect One Design Landscape Architecture and Planning after a competitive RFQ process.

The selected team, led by Laura Dougherty of Cushing Terrell, is committed to a collaborative and unified design approach with Artspace and the City of Salida to the '1st & D' Apartments project, and will be kicking it off with Open House events on Tuesday, October 24th. This event aims to share the thoughtful, inclusive, and balanced response to the community housing need being addressed by this project.

Andrew Michelson, Director of Artspace Property Development, expressed excitement, stating, "We have the great pleasure of now having Cushing Terrell join the Salida Space to Create team and leading our design efforts. They bring with them a strong portfolio of successful affordable housing developments in Colorado, as well as a depth of experience working with mountain and rural communities on impactful, locally driven projects.”

Laura Dougherty, Associate Principal of Cushing Terrell, stated, "We are enthusiastic to collaborate with the City of Salida and Artspace to bring affordable workforce housing to Salida as a part of the Artspace team. Artspace is committed to providing affordable and sustainable housing for the creative and workforce communities.”

In pursuit of transparency and inclusivity, Artspace and Cushing Terrell, alongside outreach team Connect One Design, are hosting a public Open House at the Scout Hut in Riverside Park on October 24th with identical sessions from 12PM-2PM and 5PM-7PM to accommodate varied community availability. Each session, offering a brief project presentation a half an hour into the event (at 12:30PM and 5:30PM, respectively) and an opportunity for public engagement, aims to incorporate community ideas into the planning process through interactive dialogue and shared insights. Snacks, beverages, and kids’ activities will be provided at both sessions.

The Salida Space to Create '1st & D' Apartments Project builds on Artspace's Space to Create successes, with community engagement and the architectural team's expertise driving the project. For more details about Salida Space to Create, visit: https://www.artspace.org/salida.

The ‘1st & D’ Apartments site is located at 1st St and D St, currently a vacant lot. Built around the turn of the century, the site had previously also been apartments, but fell into disrepair over the years until it was finally razed this year. The .46-acre parcel in downtown Salida was acquired by the City of Salida in mid-2022.
