Peak Tree Health Starts Now

How can you ensure your trees are healthy for the spring and summer months? Through winter watering from November to mid-April. Winter watering by hand should start as soon as you turn off your irrigation system for the season. Tree maintenance for the spring and summer begins during the winter, which seems like an unusual concept, but it is the most critical time to prevent root damage and your tree's overall health.

During the winter months, snowfall can be limited, and precipitation is almost non-existent, so to boost your trees' survival, they're going to need your help.

Here are a few ways to help with your tree's survival through the winter months:

  • Water the entire area from the trunk to the drip line (distance to outer-most branches).
  • Water when the snow has melted, and the temperature is at least 40 degrees.
  • Water slowly, applying ten gallons per inch of trunk diameter with a drip, soaker hose, or sprinkler on a low setting so water will penetrate deeply.
  • Apply 4" of organic mulch within 2-3 feet of the trunk but NOT against the trunk.
  • Repeat twice monthly if the tree is recently planted. Once a month if planted at least three years ago.

These tips will maintain your tree's health and prepare you for a full, shady area come summertime. The City is available to answer your winter watering questions.
