Press Release: Wayles Martin is the Newly Appointed Council Member for Ward 3

Wayles Martin, Council Member Ward 3

Salida, CO- The Salida City Council announced that they will appoint Wayles Martin to fill the council seat vacancy in Ward 3.

After Council member Harald Kasper announced his resignation from Salida City Council on Tuesday, February 6th, the City opened up applications to fill the Ward 3 seat. Colorado Revised Statutes state that if any vacancy occurs in the office of Council because of a resignation, the same seat shall be filled by appointment by a City Council majority vote.  Candidates had to have resided in the ward in which he or she is a candidate for a period of at least twelve consecutive months. City Council held interviews on Monday, March 18th with seven (7) potential candidates. They then appointed Wayles Martin on Tuesday evening.

Join us in welcoming Wayles Martin in Salida’s next phase of Council leadership! Wayles Martin commented, “I am eager to get started on this journey that I have been preparing myself for. I look forward to working with city staff, city council, and most importantly my constituents to find creative solutions to the current and future problems that this community faces”.

Wayles Martin is a full-time Salida employee in the foodservice industry and has successfully become a soon-to-be homeowner through the Chaffee Housing Trust program. Previously working for the Southwest Conservation Corps and Teach For America has afforded her the firsthand experience of knowing the importance of youth development and environmental sustainability. Originally from Florida, Martin moved with her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology to Colorado in 2017. Her move was inspired by Colorado’s recreational accessibility and her desire to build community, which she has noted to be one of her greatest strengths.
