When it’s cold and windy outside, what do you do with your kids? Kids, especially the young ones, are often unwilling to snuggle and drink cocoa all day on a miserable day—and we all know how important physical activity is to a growing child! And while winter has its many laudable qualities, the ability to quickly get the kids out of the house and active is not one of them.
Rowdy at Riverside is an on-going Salida Recreation program to help get the winter wiggles out! The playgroup happens every Friday at the Scout Hut from 10:30 am – noon. It is a fun time for the kids, with lots of toys to play with, activities to engage their senses and friends to run around with. Parents also enjoy the time, chatting while their children are engage, or helping their child participate.
The program is run by Salida Recreation staff, including myself, and I take a great personal interest in the program because I have a young son and love to help all children learn and play. The “official” age range is kids 5 and under, but we love to have older siblings join too! They can have a lot of fun with the materials and we love to see many different ages of kids interacting and learning from each other.
The cost is only $1 for kids 23 months and under, and $3 for kids 24 months and older. Some parents even take advantage of the time to go run errands or grab a cup of coffee—this service is happily provided for a $5 fee.
Another great way to get some free time as a parent while your kids get social interaction and physical activity is one of Salida Rec’s Parent’s Night Out. We offer this program several evenings a year, including this Saturday, January 25. It will be held at the Scout Hut from 6:00 – 9:30 pm.
The cost is only $10 for the first child, with siblings just an additional $5. Children 2 and up are welcome. We’ll serve a nutritious dairy and gluten free snack, play games, make art, run around and watch a movie. Registrations are taken at the door.
The next Parent’s Night Out will be held on March 15th—just in time for a Saint Patty’s celebration!
Another exciting development from Salida Recreation is the approval by City Council of our Scholarship Fund. This fund is made up from donations collected at free events, like our summer concert series, as well as private donations. A big thank you to High Country Bank, whose support of our Friday Enrichment program has also allowed us to provide scholarships specifically for Friday programming.
Our winter recreation guide is not out and about and we are open for registration. Registration is taken at the Aquatic Center, located at 410 W Hwy 50 or by calling (719) 539-6738. We have lots of fun planned for youth and adults!
Savor the wintery chills and rejoice in each lengthening day! Happy Recreating to everyone!
