Salida’s newest park, located alongside the Arkansas River behind the Touber Building at 448 E. 1st St was dedicated in a ceremony to former City Councilman Jim (‘Jimmy’) McCormick yesterday.
The dedication included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in honor of Jimmy’s over 50 years of service to the community, which is displayed on a large rock at the entrance to the park.
The ceremony included remarks about Jimmy’s friendship and service to the community by Theresa Casey, City of Salida Recreation Manager, Merle Baranczyk, editor and publisher of the Mountain Mail, and Terry Scanga, Upper Arkansas Water Conservation District manager. McCormick served almost eight years as a Councilman and helped establish the Upper Arkansas Water Conservation District, among many other service and volunteer efforts. Jimmy’s remarks made special mention of the support he received from his wife, Ellen, which made all of his efforts in the community possible.
