Mark your calendars, and plan to join us on Tuesday, July 23 for a public workshop to discuss the draft for the Creative District Strategic Plan. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the SteamPlant Ballroom, 220 W. Sackett Ave.
In March 2012, Salida’s historic downtown was selected as one of only two inaugural “Certified Creative Districts” in Colorado. The Salida Creative District was formed to support ongoing economic growth and to create a climate in which creative people and creative enterprises can prosper.
Salida’s growth as an art and culture center is a culmination of many years of effort by artists and creative entrepreneurs of all types, including local restaurateurs, musicians and designers. More than 230 locally owned services operate in the creative district, including 25 restaurants, bars, and microbreweries, as well as one distillery; a film production studio; 40 retail stores, including three bicycle shops; a boutique hotel; 30 artist-owned or operated galleries; and numerous other businesses as wide-ranging as the healing arts and nonprofits.
Over the past year, the city of Salida hosted public workshops to solicit input from the creative community in order to create a Strategic Plan for the District. These ideas have been compiled into a draft plan. During the upcoming meeting, a brief overview of the draft plan will be presented to the public, who will then have a chance to help prioritize the projects, policies and ideas for this district.
The meeting will also include a brief presentation by Farrah Fine of Fine Design LLC, who was selected from seven applicants to help create a brand for the district.
Community Development Director Michael Yerman also will present an update on the process that the Planning Commission will be undergoing to create a Wayfinding Plan for the entire city. The Planning Commission will be working on the Plan over the next several months during their regular meetings.
Now is the time to voice your opinion about Salida’s future. I hope you can join us at the SteamPlant on Tuesday, July 23, 2013.
