Salida Recreation 2013 Fitness Challenge

Maggie Murdoch, Salida Recreation

If you are like me, you might embrace the holidays as a special time of indulgence—a time to cook and savor rich, delicious food with friends and family.

All this is fine and good, and I believe that when indulgent eating is fully enjoyed, one benefits from the many flavors, aromas, and good company of the holidays. Enjoy it, savor it, and balance it all with lots of water and frequent physical activity.

Then, as the clocks count onward and we tick another year forward at midnight, the focus changes. The heady days of pies and candies, of butter on and in everything, and of eggnog lattes give way to a desire—a need—to focus on health.

It seems it is an ingrained part of our culture to proceed though November and December with Bacchanalian gusto, arriving at the New Year with eyes a little bleary but with spirits warmed, ready to receive a renewal in our energy and our commitments.

This second part can be a little more difficult. While pouring that glass of wine or reaching for that slice of pie is pretty easy to do, finding the motivation to lace up those running shoes or pack the gym bag takes a bit more determination.

This is where the Salida Recreation 2013 Fitness Challenge comes in. This comprehensive, multi-pronged, 2 month event is a great opportunity to test your fitness level, engage in new (and free) fitness classes, fuel your competitive spirit (against yourself or others), learn about diverse aspects of health, join a community of like-minded warriors, and win great prizes!

We are all about fun, friendly competition that meets you where you are. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or a veteran coach potato, the Fitness Challenge is sure to have something of interest to you. Salida Recreation and a wide variety of community partners will team up this year to offer tons of free classes, workshops, and seminars.

Many thanks to our partners who include: Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, LiveWell Chaffee County, West Central Mental Health, The Pilates Studio, The Yoga Tonic, Simple Foods Market, Absolute Bikes, Ploughboy Market, Rebound Physical Therapy, Chaffee County Public Health, and Integrate. While the schedule of events is to be firmed up in the coming weeks, each of these partners will be hosting a free event and/or providing prizes to participants.

And an extra special thanks to The Mountain Mail, who will be bringing you news and information about the Fitness Challenge throughout its duration.

You can find out more about the 2013 Fitness Challenge at, where events will be posted as they are scheduled. You can also find a link to the fitness log for tracking your participation, which will in turn make you eligible for those great prizes!

For now, please mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 1st, for the fun and festive New Year’s Day 5K.

This annual beginner-friendly event is a great way to kickoff the new year and your commitment to participating in the Fitness Challenge. Register at the Scout Hut between 9 and 9:45am, and the 5K will start at 10 am. Prizes will be awarded to the best costume, fastest male and female, and closest guess time to your actual time.
