City Launches Facebook Page

Mark Zuckerberg, creator of the social media phenomenon Facebook, once said, “By giving people the power to share, we’re making the world more transparent.” At the City, we hear the word “transparency” often, and we are making daily strides to improve our communication with the public. In an effort to connect with Salida citizens and share information, the City recently launched a Facebook page – www.facebook.com/CityofSalida.

The City currently posts meeting materials, articles, event updates and more on the city website, www.cityofsalida.com. However, we realize receiving “status updates” from our Facebook page might be a more convenient method for citizens to receive up-to-date information.

Our Facebook page includes photos of and information about recent projects, city amenities, and city-wide events. In addition, press releases regarding city business and public notices relating to street closures or construction updates will also be posted on the page.

City Council agendas, packets and minutes are currently uploaded onto the City website.  However, I have received a few comments stating those items are difficult to find while perusing the site. To make viewing the meeting materials more convenient, links to those items will be posted on the Facebook page. Also, links to the city council minutes will be posted as they are approved.

We went paperless and dove into the world of iPads in December 2011 for City Council meeting materials.  The change has been well received by councilmen and staff, as we’re saving money and paper as well as reducing staff time and the wear and tear on our copiers. It’s a more efficient method all around. With the change, however, public packets are not printed and a limited number of agendas are printed.

If you would like a printed packet and agenda, please send a request by noon on the City Council meeting date to info@cityofsalida.com. Again, all council meeting materials are available on the City website, and links will be posted on our Facebook page. Also, DVDs of city council meetings are available for check out at the Salida Regional Library.

We’re asking citizens to please “like” and subscribe to our Facebook page to receive the latest information on City business and events! While you’re at it, feel free to “like” the Salida Recreation and Salida SteamPlant Facebook pages. Also, if you have any ideas relating to what you’d like to see on the page or our website – let us know.

On other note, we’ve been busy working with business owners and non-profit organizers to prepare for summer events.  The City’s special events committee consisting of fire, police, public works, recreation and administration staff meets the first Friday of each month with organizers to go over their events.

If you’re planning an event that includes renting public property, obtaining a special event liquor license or closing streets, please submit your application at least 45 days in advance of your event. In this way, you may meet with the special events committee and adhere to the city council’s regular meeting schedule. Applications are available on the City website.
