Summer Activities in Salida, Hot Water Line and Responsible Recycling

There’s nothing to do. Do you hear this complaint from your kids? If you do you haven’t seen our summer recreation guide. Swimming, Llama Trekking, Basketball and Volleyball Camps, Mountain Biking, Tennis, Moonlight Movies, Open Gym, Art Classes, Climbing Camp, and Track Meets are some of the fun-filled activities being presented by the Salida Recreation staff. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the hot springs pool or some of the many activities, it is time you stop by to see for yourself what is in store for the summer. Our Recreation Guide is available at the pool or check our website at www.salidarec.com for a listing of events and activities.

Check out the hot springs pool on Father’s Day. Dads are free when accompanied by their family. You loved our Schools-out-Free day in June so much that we decided to have a Back-to-School free day on August 25, from 12noon to 5pm.

This summer’s Moonlight Movies, shown free of charge at the Rotary Amphitheater in Riverside Park, will feature G-rated family movies. Because of trademark issues we are not able to publicize the names of the movies; suffice to say they are going to be good. Join us on Fridays, (July 2, 16 and 30); showings begin at twilight, all ages are welcome, popcorn and snacks will be available. Thanks to our community sponsors: The Salida Youth Advisory Council, Youth at Crossroads, and Moonlight Pizza for making this summer favorite available.

Nationally recognized basketball coach Keith Griffin, will be leading basketball and volleyball camps for boys and girls ages 8 to 12. Coach Griffin was named NBA/WNBA Youth Basketball Coach of the year 2003-2004 and has over 30 years of coaching experience. Participants are sure to walk away with more confidence in their skills and a new understanding of the game.

What’s up with the hot water line project?

The water line project continues with the addition of flow meters, a temperature sensor and an air relief valve. These improvements are necessary to determine if the hot springs source has enough flow and heat to sustain additional pools. These projects are included in the DOLA grant the City received to make improvements to the water line.

Phase I & II are complete and the water is coming in to the aquatic center 12 degrees warmer than before the project. Staff continues to work toward the creation of outdoor soaking pools.

New Amenities in Riverside Park

If you haven’t checked it out yet, the new climbing wall at Riverside Park is finished. The wall was constructed with funds from a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Grant which also included the new whitewater features, and the restrooms at the boat ramp. The GOCO grant was leveraged with funds from the Arkansas River Trust and the City of Salida. The City of Salida and Salida Mountain Sports will be hosting a FREE Bouldering Clinic on July 14 at 4pm on the new wall.

The public restroom located at the boat ramp has been delivered and is being installed, staff hopes the restrooms will be operational in late June. The whitewater features are proving to be as fun as the other river features and will test the Hooligans this FIBArk. A community ribbon cutting for all of the new Riverside Park improvements will be held on July 14th at Riverside Park.

A word about the recycling center located behind the Aquatics Center. Please, be considerate of the privilege of the recycling center. No household trash including weight benches, mattresses, slash, or other household items or trash is accepted. Only glass, aluminum, newspaper, office paper, magazines, cardboard, and plastic are accepted. If a bin is full, do not leave your recyclables on the ground, the Salida wind will take it places we do not want it to go. Please respect your neighbors and leave the area free of debris.
