Emergency: 911

The police department is responsible for the peace and safety of our residents and businesses. They have the power to make an arrest for any crime done in the violation of the laws of the city or the laws of the state. Since Salida is a small town, the police department does a lot more than make arrests and patrol the streets. Some of the activities that the Salida Police Department does are:

  • Patrol
  • Code Enforcement
  • Investigations
  • Community Service
  • Call Runs

Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG)
Chief Terry Clark has asked that Cherith Marchase submit The Salida Police Departments request to acquire the money available through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, in the amount of $16,926. The grant would be used for Underage Drinking Enforcement, Collaboration and Education whereby the Salida Police Department offers educational seminars to:

· Freshmen students – October 2009 and October 2010
· Upper classmen, grades 10-12 – April 2010 and April 2011 (Prior to Prom and Graduation)

Officer Jason Gallegos will provide a go-cart race course having students wear “Beer Goggles”, whereby the student knows directly how consuming alcohol affects their driving ability. The go-carts will be rented and brought to the teacher parking lot at Salida High School to be used as the race course. The Beer Driving Course will give hands on real life experience to driving while under the influence. An Intoxilizer clock and moniter will be purchased to educate students on effects of body weight, height, gender, number of drinks and time consumed, and how this affects each student.

In addition, the Salida Police Department in collaboration with Salida Fire Department, Chaffee County Ambulance and EMT's, Dispatch Communications Center, and the local coroner will provide a DUI Re-inactment of a vehicle crash involving teenagers who have consumed alcohol. This re-inactment would be demonstrated in front of the Salida High School, prior to Prom and Graduation, in early April. (Student actors will be staged in an actual vehicle that has been involved in a crash, however, the students will be sober and will not have had any alcohol. They will have life like wounds and injuries created using makeup to resemble the wounds.)

Third, the Salida Police Department will provide party patrols watch Friday night from 8 p.m. – 2 a.m. at locations where teenagers congregate to party involving alcohol beginning October 2, 2009.

The above activities are dependant on the Salida Police Department acquiring the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. Please contact Chief Terry Clark at 719-539-6880 if anyone in the community has any disagreements about the programs and what is involved.
