Sales Tax for 2015 Calendar Year Increases 10.7%

Collections of the City of Salida’s 3% sales tax for the month of December totaled $436,420. This represents an increase of $28,413, or 7.0%, from December 2014 and sets another monthly record. Annual sales tax collections in 2015 of $4,919,355 are $477,028, or 10.7%, greater than 2014.

The December 2015 sales tax collected by businesses engaged in retail trade, which comprises approximately two-thirds of Salida’s total sales tax, increased 2.0%. Within the retail trade group of vendors, automotive related retail sales increased by 15.6% and all others increased just 1.1% compared to December 2014. The next largest industry group is restaurants with nearly one-sixth of the total revenue; sales tax reported by this group of businesses increased 40.3% in December. Sales tax collected by hotels, motels and vacation rentals increased 22.3% in December. Delinquent filers in these last two groups of businesses contributed to the year over year increase during December.

For the full year, 2015 sales tax collected by businesses engaged in retail trade increased 12.4% compared to 2014. Within the retail trade group of vendors, automotive related retail sales increased by 16.8% and all others increased 12.1% compared to 2014. Restaurants increased by 13.3% and the lodging industry increased by 10.2%.
