The City of Salida invites you to a public meeting February 3, 2014 at 6:00 pm at the Salida SteamPlant to discuss the Salida River Trail project and Great Outdoors Colorado (“GOCO”) Paths to Parks grant. The City was selected as a finalist for the Path to Parks Grant Cycle for the construction of the Salida River Trail in 2015.
The intent of this grant opportunity is to provide youth and families with increased opportunities for safe trail access to their local parks and open spaces. Providing free, safe, non-motorized access will encourage trail activity while increasing the exploration and use of existing outdoor opportunities. The City will be submitting the final grant application at the beginning of March. GOCO will be announcing grant recipients in the middle of June 2014.
On August 27, 2013, the City of Salida Community Development Department and Recreation Department held a Marvin Park stakeholder meeting to discuss the trail proposal. The crowd in attendance was supportive of the trail concept and provided valuable input for the planning of the trail through Marvin Park.
Also staff has spoken to the final property owner where no easement is present just east of Riverside Park. Negotiations are ongoing and the City hopes a trail easement will be obtained by the end of February.
The Salida River Trail will connect the historic downtown and existing river walk with McCormick Park and Sands Lake. The project includes construction of a new trail from Sands Lake through Marvin Park. This section of trail will also include a new restroom facility, possible new boat ramp at Marvin Park, and upgrades to the parking lot at Marvin Park.
The second section of trail construction will connect Riverside Park and McCormick Park by a trail along the river. The City is also applying for a Fishing is Fun grant to construct an in-river ADA fishing access in the Arkansas River adjacent to Sands Lake and to create an ADA parking area at Sands Lake.
During this meeting, the details of the project will be presented. Public input will be taken from the different
agencies involved including the City of Salida, Chaffee County, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, and Salida Park Open space and Trails and incorporated into the final project design. We look forward to hearing your input this coming Monday.
