Ordinance Banning Open Flames & Burning Rescinded

Interim Salida Fire Chief Doug Bess rescinded the city-wide ordinance which banned fireworks and outdoor flames and burning Monday afternoon due to recent weather conditions in Chaffee County and after consulting with area fire officials.

The use of charcoal grills and legal fireworks are permitted within city limits. Legal fireworks under the Salida Municipal Code include toy paper caps (no more than .25 of a gram of explosive compound per cap) sparklers, trick matches, trick noisemakers and toy smoke devices.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office recently lowered fire restrictions to Stage I.  The fire danger rating is reduced to high (from extreme). In addition, the county ban on the sale, use, and possession of fireworks passed by county commissioners will remain in effect.

Bess said residents should continue to be cautious as there is still a possibility of fire. However, he said the chance of rapid spread of fire has decreased compared to two weeks ago.
