Prescribed Burn in Chaffee County set for Tuesday, March 13

The South Arkansas Fire Protection District will be conducting a 17 acre prescribed burn on Tuesday, March 13 at 7021 CR 104, (Hwy 50 & CR 104). The burn is designed to mitigate potential fire hazards by removing fuel including dead grass and dead and down trees. The burn process will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will be complete by 3:00 p.m.

The South Arkansas Fire Protection District will be assisted by the Salida Fire Department, the Wet Mountain Fire Protection District, Colorado State Forest Service and the Juniper Valley Buena Vista Wildland Crew. Salida Fire Chief Don Taylor said “This is an area that has a considerable amount of fuel that we are removing to create a barrier between the City owned (Vandaveer) property and the banks of the South Arkansas River.”

Chief Don Taylor and Captain Chris Bainbridge of the Salida Fire Department will be the Prescribed Fire Managers and have completed a Prescribed Burn Plan. The prescribed burn will not occur if winds in the area maintain a speed of 15 mph or more or gusts of 20 mph.

The prescribed burn will produce a large volume of smoke in the area. Please do not call 911 if you see smoke in the prescribed burn area.
